“The yard of this house is a graveyard of moments and everything left behind is a clue. And I am here to dig.”
There’s a ghost haunting 208 Water Street. She doesn’t know who she was, or why she’s still here. She does know that she is drawn to Maggie, the new girl in town, and her friends – beautiful, carefree Pauline and Liam, the boy who loves her.
But the ghost isn’t all that’s lurking in Gill Creek… Someone is killing young girls all across the county. Can the ghost keep these three friends safe? Or does she have another purpose?
I first need to thank the author, and the publishers, Hachette’s Children’s Books, for letting me have early access to this book via Netgalley, in exchange for a review.
The Moment Collector is a ghost story, in one way, but then again, it isn’t.
The story begins with a girl moving into the remote neighbourhood, at a time where it becomes more and more dangerous around that area. But instead of focusing on the crime and mystery surrounding the killings, the author keeps us focused on that which directly affects the girl’s life: the worries about getting a job to afford going to college, making new friends, falling in love, and learning to come to terms with certain consequences. Which, of course, is more realistic.
This book is enjoyably paced, well written. I enjoyed most of the characters, although there were times where Maggie began to annoy me with her whining. But I certainly was not expecting the ending, or rather, I wasn’t expecting the way the ending was written. The ending this story was given fits well with the story, despite it being a bit of a twist. It’s so hard to explain without giving any spoilers away!
I really enjoyed this book and definitely want to try reading more of Anderson’s works. I would recommend it to fans of contemporary Young Adult.
