A love story like no other, this is the debut novel from Carrie Hope Fletcher, author of the Sunday Times No. 1 bestseller All I Know Now.

Evie Snow is eighty-two when she quietly passes away in her sleep, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. It’s the way most people wish to leave the world but when Evie reaches the door of her own private heaven, she finds that she’s become her twenty-seven-year-old self and the door won’t open.

Evie’s soul must be light enough to pass through so she needs to get rid of whatever is making her soul heavy. For Evie, this means unburdening herself of the three secrets that have weighed her down for over fifty years, so she must find a way to reveal them before it’s too late. As Evie begins the journey of a lifetime, she learns more about life and love than she ever thought possible, and somehow , some way, she may also find her way back to her long lost love . . .

On the Other Side will transport you to a world that is impossible to forget. Powerful, magical and utterly romantic, this is a love story like no other from everyone’s favourite ‘big sister’, Carrie Hope Fletcher. (Goodreads 2017)

Now, firstly a disclaimer, I am a youtube follower of the author. I’ve watched her vlogs for a couple of years now, and she is one of the few vloggers who I actually make an effort to watch. I find her content is well thought out, emotive, and relateable, without constantly plugging products or her bigging herself up to be some sort of star, she comes across as “normal”, and that is a nice change to see . So yes, I am already a fan of Fletcher prior to reading her book. But a good vlogger does not necessarily equate to a good author- so therefore this review will be as neutral as possible.

Overall? I really enjoyed this book- don’t worry, this is not a negative review!

The story follows a woman named Evie, who has recently passed away. The idea being that when a person dies, they each get a sort of “personal heaven”, a certain place, time or age which reflects when you were the most “you”, at your happiest or strongest. For Evie, that is being 27 years old, living in a crummy cheap fllat with other interesting tennants in the building. Because this is the age where she meets the love of her life. However, she has found that the afterlife is not as simply as “moving on”, because her soul is still too heavy to pass through her old flat door, where her afterlife- whatever it entails- resides. I won’t go into much more because spoilers, but if you like romance stories, I recommend this book for sure. Evie is a wonderfully written character, and the use of symbolism within this book is lovely. There is plenty of romance, nostalgia and magic within this book which will make you keep turning the pages. The story was nicely paced and it didn’t disjoint the story when it flipped between the “past” and the “present”, and I felt the ending was a very satisfying conclusion to the novel.

I’n looking forward to reading more of Fletcher’s fiction works to see how she grows as an author.
